connection lost

telephones in the
twentyfirst century
function by satellite.
the sound of your
voice is broken down
into sterile numbers, signal
sent first to tower then to
a hunk of inelegeant metal
tumbling dumbly through the sky
with secrets it would not
know how to tell or why.

bouncing back earthward,
the numbers locate the signal
tower nearest their target
from where digits are beamed
to a handheld device and
reimagined as your voice
on the other end
of the line.
thats not why you sound
so far from me.
but that's fine.
